Off the Grid is episode 16 of season 9 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2005.
Stargates are disappearing by the dozen: someone is stealing rings across the galaxy, and SG-1, trapped in the middle of an undercover mission among kassa traffickers, nearly vanishes along with one of them. The trail leads to Ba'al, who is building a strategic stockpile of gates in anticipation of the Ori onslaught. His logic is airtight, and that's exactly the problem.
Why it matters to the mythology
The Lucian Alliance enters the stage through its narcotic corn, and Ba'al shows that galactic organized crime has a future.
First appearance

The review
A delightful space heist episode, part infiltration among galactic corn narco-traffickers, part hunt for the gate thief. Ba'al as a ring collector proves once again that he's always three moves ahead: his plan is objectively reasonable, and that's what makes him so infuriating. The final recovery of the gates, by way of beacons and beaming, wraps up with technical flair. High-flying entertainment with, in embryo, the enemy of the post-Ori era.
