Avatar is episode 6 of season 8 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2004.
The SGC is testing a chair-based training simulator loaded with Teal'c's memories: Goa'uld invasions in virtual reality, with real sensations. Teal'c plugs in to calibrate the difficulty... and the game learns from him, adapts, and refuses to let him win. Each defeat sends him back to the start, more exhausted, in a loop whose only exit may be failure.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode: a nightmarish variant of Groundhog Day, and a glimpse into Teal'c's psychological blind spots.
The review
The unbeatable video game, unbeatable because it reads your fear: the concept was ahead of its time, and the episode exploits it with real nastiness, each simulator restart eating away a little more at the invincible warrior. Watching Teal'c, of all people, lose over and over is almost transgressive. Daniel entering the simulation to back him up provides just the right emotional key: you can't win alone against yourself. Repetitive toward the end, but clever and grueling.
