Proving Ground is episode 13 of season 5 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2001.
Four cadets, including the gifted Hailey, take the most realistic exam of their lives: SGC invasion drills under O'Neill's command. A little too realistic: partway through a scenario, the training seems to turn into a real takeover of the base, and the rookies have to decide what's simulation and what's real blood.
Why it matters to the mythology
The program's next generation trains before our eyes: the series is already thinking about life after SG-1.
The review
A fun nested episode whose whole appeal lies in the constant doubt between exercise and reality, and in the obvious pleasure O'Neill takes in torturing his cadets. The final reveal defuses the stakes a little, that's the limit of the concept, but the young actors' energy and Jack's half-proud, half-grumpy look at the new blood make up for it. A pleasant break before the big end-of-season shake-ups.
