Cor-ai is episode 15 of season 1 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1997.
On Cartago, Teal'c is recognized by a man whose father he killed long ago while serving Apophis. The locals put him through the Cor-ai, a trial where the sentence is death. Teal'c refuses to run: he believes he must answer for what he once was. A sober, powerful episode about conscience.
Why it matters to the mythology
No galactic stakes, but the episode defines Teal'c forever: a man who carries his crimes instead of running from them.
The review
A moral chamber piece with no monster, no firefight, almost no sets: a man on trial for the crimes of the weapon he used to be. Season 1 had its most adult episode right here. Teal'c refusing to defend himself because he believes he deserves the sentence, O'Neill fighting to save a friend who doesn't want to be saved: it all rings true. You can quibble about the slightly convenient ending, but the question it asks, what we owe the victims of who we used to be, remains one of the most beautiful in the series.
