The Shrine is episode 6 of season 5 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2008.
McKay catches a brain parasite that devours his faculties: the city's genius loses words, equations, then faces, regressing toward childhood before his friends' eyes. All that remains is a folkloric hope, the shrine of Talus, a cave where the dying are said to recover their minds for one last day. Science doesn't believe in it. They go anyway.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone yet essential episode: Keller's declaration, Jeannie's early goodbye, and the most heartbreaking day of lucidity in the series.
The review
The most beautiful episode of Atlantis, the one I make skeptics watch. Rodney's degeneration is filmed like a real illness, with no monster to kill, and David Hewlett is prodigious from one scene to the next: terror, denial, a lost child's gentleness. The beer on the pier, where a diminished McKay comes to say goodbye to Sheppard while he still can, is the emotional summit of the entire franchise. And the final solution, a simple drill and a bet in the field, gives the miracle back to humans. A masterpiece; tissues required.
