Outsiders is episode 12 of season 5 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2008.
On Balar, two populations coexist badly: the native inhabitants and the refugees from a decimated colony, healthy carriers of the Hoffan serum and therefore living poison to the Wraith. When a hive demands the refugees be handed over, the local council is ready to sign. Beckett, on a vaccination mission, finds himself at the center of a roundup he refuses to condone.
Why it matters to the mythology
The human fallout of the Hoffan serum: being immune makes you a pariah, and solidarity among prey has its limits.
The review
An issue episode on the most uncomfortable question in the Wraith universe: what does a community do when part of it endangers the rest by its mere existence? The parallel with every scapegoating logic is transparent and deliberate. Beckett gets his best post-resurrection role, a conscientious-objector doctor amid collective cowardice. The resolution is a bit tidy, but the unease stays. Dignified.
