Inferno is episode 19 of season 2 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2005.
A courtesy visit turns into a geological catastrophe: beneath the city of Taranis, a supervolcano is waking up, roused in part by the reckless use of the local shield. The evacuation of an entire people races against a planetary eruption, with the only way out a dusty Lantean ship named the Orion, and a takeoff through the pyroclastic cloud.
Why it matters to the mythology
The Orion joins the inventory: a second Lantean warship, half broken down but packed with drones, just in time for the end of the season.
The review
The Atlantis disaster movie of the year: lava, ash and a seismic countdown, executed with a poor man's blockbuster know-how that wins you over. McKay as an improvised volcano expert reels off delicious apocalyptic diagnoses, and the Orion's takeoff through the eruption delivers a generous visual climax. The substance stays thin, but the craftsmanship is solid and the Orion is worth its weight in drones for what's to come. Honest spectacle.
