Grace Under Pressure is episode 14 of season 2 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2005.
A jumper plunges into the sea with McKay aboard: the cockpit sinks into the deep, the water rises, and the only copilot available is a hallucination of Samantha Carter, a projection born of a concussion and an old crush. Between imaginary flirting and very real physics, Rodney has to save himself... by finally listening to himself.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode: the Atlantis counterpart to Carter's inner journey in "Grace", and a dive, literally, into McKay's psyche.
The review
McKay's "Grace", and a high point for the character: alone in a cockpit taking on water, Rodney faces his worst company, himself, and the hallucination of Carter, half fantasy and half superego, pushes him along with perfect mocking tenderness. Amanda Tapping as a guest plays the double game with gusto. The rising water paces it all as an icy chamber piece. Funny, nerve-racking, moving: the house cocktail in its purest form. Excellent.
