The Hive is episode 11 of season 2 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2005.
Ford's plan crashes in midflight: the team ends up in a hive's cocoons, with McKay overdosing on enzyme and an escape that turns chaotic when a second hive appears. A Wraith civil war breaks out over their heads, a hint of a bigger secret: livestock is growing scarce, and the predators are starting to devour each other.
Why it matters to the mythology
The first sign of the Wraith famine and the fratricidal wars to come; Ford disappears in the explosion, officially with no body.
The review
A second part generous with action, cocoons, an escape and a battle of hives, whose real contribution is strategic: the Wraith are fighting each other over food, and that crack will become the lever of the following seasons. McKay's withdrawal, a small ordeal played with raw nerves, humanizes the stretch. As for Ford, the series gives him a ghost's exit, neither dead nor saved, true to the waste of the character. An honest two-parter, a successful home stretch.
