One of Destiny's behind-the-scenes scientists, often overshadowed by Rush, but always at his post. Volker is the ordinary civilian thrust into the extraordinary, who holds firm.
Overview
Dr. Dale Volker is one of the civilian scientists stranded aboard Destiny in Stargate Universe. Often overshadowed by Rush's genius, he is nonetheless one of the essential cogs keeping the old ship running.
His story
Volker is no hero: he's an ordinary, slightly clumsy scientist, thrown against his will into an adventure that's beyond him. But as the ordeals pile up, he holds his ground, solves problems and survives where many would have cracked.
His bickering with his colleague Brody brings a touch of humor and humanity to the series' often heavy atmosphere.
Volker embodies those everyday characters, neither soldiers nor geniuses, who do the bulk of the work behind the scenes, and remind us that space exploration also relies on people like us.
The actor
Volker is played by Patrick Gilmore, a Canadian actor present throughout Stargate Universe, whom science fiction fans have since seen in series such as Travelers and You Me Her.
He gives the scientist an endearing good nature and fragility.
